Favorite Uses for Essential Oils

Essential oils can come in quite handy for everyday use. From aromatherapy to relieving cuts and burns, here are some favorite everyday essential oils uses from the Be Vivid You Staff!

Cuts, Scrapes, Skin Itching, Burns

Try rubbing lavender, frankincense, and tea tree essential oils to the affected area. According to one staff member, the lavender and frankincense helped soothe the skin around stitches on her son’s arm, as well as help heal some cuts and scrapes with her other children. In fact, after applying the frankincense and lavender oils to her son’s stitches for a few days, she says the stitched area healed nicely without pain. For a nasty, deep scrape to her daughter’s leg, she added tea tree oil to the lavender and frankincense and said the wound healed up in only one day!

What makes frankincense oil great for cuts and scrapes is its active ingredient, boswellic acid, which gives the essential oil its amazing properties. It can also calm itchy skin! Try applying a thin layer to the area. Some of our staff report that this is helpful with itchy hives and contact dermatitis.

Lavender essential oil is great in that it may help stimulate collagen production, which can make scarring less noticeable. We have applied lavender essential oil to burns to help inhibit scarring with great results! It also is a great sunburn soother. Add a few drops to your usual body moisturizer. One staff member swears by this method and says it takes out the burn by the next morning!

Calming

Lavender essential oil makes our list again for its calming properties and versatility of applications. To calm at night, try adding a few drops to your (or your child’s) pillowcase. One of our mothers on staff says it works very well on one of her younger children. She also applies drops of vetiver essential oil to his bath and to the collar of his shirt to boost his focus in school.

Staying Healthy

A spoonful of raw honey and 1-2 drops of thieves essential oil is the remedy of choice for colds and coughs in one Be Vivid You household! Thieves oil is actually a blend of several essential oils including clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus radiata, and rosemary. When these oils come together, they pack an immune-boosting punch. It also may be a good idea to diffuse some thieves oil during cold and flu season, since one study has found that it could fight off airborne bacteria. Plus, it smells really good!

Mosquito Control

When you’re camping in the deep woods, mosquito repellent is a must! But instead of reaching for the commercial Deet formulas, try what one of our Be Vivid You families uses -- a mix of tea tree, lavender, and citronella essential oils. While you may have to reapply it more often than what you get from a spray bottle at the store, it’s better for your overall health, feels great on your skin, and smells so good! You can also drip this mixture into your campfire (with great results), and apply it to your outdoor cushions.

One writer for Be Vivid You also swears by lemon essential oil for mosquito repellent. Just add a few diffusers around your sitting area. You can also burn the oil with an essential oil burner, and the scent is very uplifting!

These are just a few of our favorite ways to use essential oils, what are yours? We’d love to hear about them in the comments!
