But, have you ever asked yourself, how is geranium oil made? And, how do I use it?

Read on to discover more about how to use geranium essential oils as a fragrance or a cure for common skin ailments.

How is Geranium Oil Made?

The wild geranium has over 300 different species. The most common one used to make geranium essential oils is Pelargonium graveolens (also known as rose geranium, sweet-scented geranium, old-fashion rose geranium, and rose-scented geranium).

Whatever you choose to call it, this species originated in South Africa. Since Ancient Egyptian times, it was used there as a cure for hair and skin issues and to promote calm and peaceful feelings.

In the 1600s, it was brought North with the shipping trade and was later cultivated in France, where it became part of the booming perfume industry.

Today, commercial production is dominated by Egypt and China, with only a small amount coming from South Africa.

To make geranium oil, you steam distilling leaves from a geranium plant. (Unlike many other fragrances and oils, geranium oil’s scent doesn’t come from its flowers.) Then, you press the leaves for their oil.

Geranium oil is found in perfume products and cosmetics and is a popular choice for aromatherapy enthusiasts.

Geranium Aromatherapy

Studies have shown that aromatherapy with geranium essential oils helps relieve stress and anxiety. Breathing in their sweet aroma brings about feelings of calmness and tranquility.

A study of first-time moms found that inhaling geranium while in labor made most women feel less stressed. There was also a significant decrease in their diastolic blood pressure, proving the efficacy of this extract as a non-invasive option for anxiety during childbirth.

Aromatherapy steam facials are also a great way to renew your skin and open your pores after your next sauna session. That way, you can beautify your skin and clear your blemishes.
