When it comes to parenting, we all want to do our best, and that’s where crunchy, scrunchy, and silky mom styles come into play. Keeping up with parenting style labels can be as exhausting as raising your little humans, but understanding the differences can help you discover which one you most closely align with!
Born of the internet (like most catchy phrases), these textures describe varying parenting tactics, ranging from cloth diapers to formula to schooling, and everything in between.
Crunchy Style
On one side of the spectrum, we have crunchy parenting, which revolves around all things holistic. If you’re a crunchy mom, you’re probably all about non-toxic toys, organic foods (and let’s be honest, you probably frequent the local farmer’s market more than the grocery store), and send your kids to a Montessori or Waldorf school (if you don’t already homeschool).
A crunchy mom may also favor unmedicated home births, natural remedies, co-sleeping, cloth diapers, and an overall more sustainably focused lifestyle.
Silky Style
On the opposite side of things, the silky mom tends to take full advantage of modern luxuries and technologies, perhaps opting for epidurals at birth, private schooling, and technology-based toys.
A silky mom may also embrace Western medicine and doesn’t shy away from fast food, disposable diapers, and vaccinations.
Scrunchy Style
You can probably see by now that the word “scrunchy” is a clever mash-up of “crunchy” and “silky.” As the name suggests, this parenting style combines different tactics from the above two, focusing more on personal preference and general convenience.
A scrunchy mom probably monitors screen time but still grabs Chick-fil-A on the way home from school. She may diffuse essential oils around the house but still grabs those Clorox disinfecting wipes when things get down and dirty. She may look for wooden, non-toxic toys but opts for disposable diapers because they are quicker to clean up.
No matter which category you find yourself falling into, it’s important to remember that despite how tribalistic forums on the internet can get, you don’t need to be all-or-nothing over these parenting styles. The truth is that each family is unique and what works for one may not work for another. It’s okay to pick and choose elements from different parenting styles and make them your own.
It’s also worth noting that parenting styles can evolve and change over time. A crunchy mom may become more open to Western medicine as her children grow older, while a silky mom may become more interested in holistic health practices as she learns more about them.
Ultimately, what matters most is that we do what’s best for our children and our families, based on our own values, beliefs, and experiences. By embracing a flexible and open-minded approach to parenting, we can create a healthy and loving environment for our children to grow and thrive in.
